HOW TO JUDGE THE QUALITY OF AN OPINION POLL PDF Print E-mail

Public opinion polls are an integral part of democracy. Yet, in Romania (among other countries), some politicians vehemently question the results of (most if not all) opinion polls. Moreover, some Romanian political actors have called for a ban on the publication of public opinion polls during electoral campaigns and for instituting the state’s control over private firms that conduct public opinion polls. Like in other countries, in Romania, too, those who want to forbid the publication of opinion polls are representatives of political parties that either lost the last elections or are doing poorly in current opinion polls. Also, polls criticism tends to increase in frequency and intensity prior to and during electoral campaigns and/or in periods of political turbulence (e.g., parliamentary and governmental crises etc.).

Unfortunately, unprofessional polls and push polls (in fact, political [tele]marketing) do exist and proliferate. To help journalists, the large public, and political actors to asses the quality of a public opinion poll, we have included an excerpt from ESOMAR/WAPOR Guide to Public Opinion Polls. This excerpt contains a series of frequently asked questions on how to judge the quality an opinion poll here.
